At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

Bespoke Bookings

Spend a couple of days out in the woods with friends & a private guide.

Whether you're new to bushcraft, having a birthday getaway, Stag/Hen do, or wanting specialist tuition on a specific topic.

All the skills we cover will be tailored to your needs to maximize the value of your time with us.

What’s Covered:

Quite simply our best bushcraft experiences are spent with friends, and these are some of our favourites to deliver. You get private tuition directly from us, so it's just you and some friends/family outdoors learning what you want to learn. I'd highly recommend this to anyone new to bushcraft, or outdoors skills in general and I'll happily suggest some topics if you don't know where to start; but also to those who've perhaps camped out plenty and have a good basic knowledge: there maybe one particular skill set or project you want to work on, with a private course we can really get into the depths of a topic.

Example Itinerary

Below is an example of what some clients who were new to Bushcraft wanted to learn during their time outdoors.

Day One

  • Start- Siting Camp, Considerations and location.

  • Setting up Tarps, several configurations for different conditions. Simple tarp knots.

  • Beginning to build nature shelters, shapes, uses and construction.

  • Lunch (please bring your own packed lunch with plenty to eat as it's hungry work)

  • Finishing Shelters for the night, thatching and bedding.

  • Fire lighting skills, one match fires, fire steels, natural tinders, fire lays and their uses. safe fire procedures, getting the most from your fuel.

  • Knife skills, knife selection and what to avoid, making cooking rigs for the evening, safe knife use, various cutting methods, how to sharpen

  • Dinner time, campfire cooking, general relaxing in the woods

  • Camp hygiene, how to look after yourself in the woods

  • Looking at equipment, planning outings, day kit and weekly kit, food

  • Getting sorted for the night, last touches to shelters, settling in etc

  • Night time tree ID and walk, we’ll look at some basic constellations if its a clear night too

  • Planned sessions finish. General chat around the campfire.

Day Two

  • I’ll be up getting the fire lit and the kettle on, breakfast started around 7am. You’re more than welcome to get up and practice your fire lighting skills instead of me though!

  • Breakfast will be bacon and bannock, with mushrooms and tomatoes

  • Basic tracking, looking for sign, following trails, hopefully some animal sightings

  • Woodland navigation leading into locating water, making water safe to drink

  • Wet weather fire skills, the art of making feathersticks, a few tips on home made tinder

  • Dismantle our natural shelters and clear away all sign we were there. Your chance to go over anything we’ve covered, ask questions, give feedback etc

  • Finish.

Here a few clients on a private overnight course with me light their fire for the evening. Using the firesteel techniques they'd learnt earlier in the afternoon, and the birch bark they'd harvested from a fallen tree they effected a quick and fail-safe fire to boil their water.

REVIEWS:

  • I had a great day with Jamie Dakota from Howl Bushcraft learning how to erect a Tarp and Hammock and carve a spoon. Jamie was very professional in the way he delivered the course. I found it easy to learn from Jamie and felt very comfortable in the way he explained things to me, I soon picked it up! He was very patient and took time to make sure I had understood what he was teaching. The course was awesome, an experience to remember and I booked to go on another course with Jamie, a walk through woodland at night time which was really exciting and I learnt loads again. I will always go back to Howl Bushcraft because I have been with other very well known bushcraft training schools and they didn’t have the same quality of training I received with Howl Bushcraft. I will always go back to Jamie for a course on Bushcraft because from my experience I have found him very professional and he has a real wealth of knowledge on the subject.

Kind regards Phil.

  • Had another brilliant day with Jamie Dakota of Howl Bushcraft. And am so pleased that I actually managed to come away with something resembling an actual spoon! At every session I grow in confidence, learn a bit more, get a bit better & Jamie is kind, patient, positive, knowledgeable & gives me small tips that make a big difference.
