At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

WildRoots - Women of Bushcraft Course

Bushcraft Skills Courses

Join us at our stunning oak canopied private woodland set within the Harewood Estate of West Yorkshire. Our canopied basecamp and a wood fire ensure our clients keep dry and the kettle is always boiling so bring along your favourite brew.

All of our sessions are run with a maximum of 10 people, that way we can maintain a low presence in the forest in order to experience Nature up close. The small group sizes also ensure a high level of interaction with the instructor, we'll get plenty of one to one tuition through the workshops to develop your skills at your own pace.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we're very open and there's no obligations.

This weekend is not a prettified or dumbed down version of bushcraft. We have chosen skills which can have a tendency to either be left out of many courses and thus not pursued by large numbers of people ( many of these might traditionally have been termed ‘ womens work’ namely fibrework and soft basketry and herbal medicine) and those skills that are often unconsciously taught in a way that is biased towards a male physique and strength and as such often seem unattainable to women and young people.

For much of human history women contributed a oft ignored trove of skills to the community- From medicine, fibrework and other crafts to less tangible threads of humanity such as story keeping. In the west those threads have been fragmented. Community among women is still treated with good natured suspicion, but you don’t have to look far for examples of women working together bringing change that was thought impossible. Bushcraft has existed as a popular hobby and for many a lifestyle, but we are only just beginning to appreciate the mental, spiritual as well as physical value of a more holistic approach. We need nature, we need to interact with it in more depth than simply what we can take from it.  This course approaches some of the more common elements of a bushcraft course, and some less common with a softness which will appeal to many.

    • For various reasons the field of Bushcraft as an outdoor leisure pursuit has been a very male dominated sphere for much of its existence in the UK. Although here at Howl we’ve been fortunate to see a more balanced ratio of genders on our courses over the years, we wanted to create this course to offer a subtly different approach which should not only appeal to women, but those working within the industry who want to  encourage more participation from women and girls.

“ Invariably the deities of the old ways become the demons in the new; what was good becomes evil. Woman as chief representative of the old ways , suffers the consequences of man’s fall from grace. Even the pangs of birth, rather than part of the divine act of producing a miracle, become a womans just desserts”
— Jeanne Achterberg, woman as healer 1990
