At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

Bushmen Thermo Tarp 3×3 Olive

£65.00

The Bushmen Thermo Tarp is one of the products we’ve been looking for years to find here at Howl.

The silvery reflective coating on the underside combines the best feature of your standard space blanket with all the benefits of a robust tarp. Best of all, it acts like a two way mirror as from underneath in day light your tarp appears as translucent as a normal green tarp. Partnered with a fire several paces away the reflective properties of the tarp really show off.

The webbing tape perimeter and ridge-line create an incredibly durable frame like suspension for the tarp, taking most of the strain away from the fabric itself to reduce the chance of tear outs.

  • Lightweight (only 0.75kg)

  • UPF factor 50+

  • Thermally reflective

  • Robust construction

Bushmen Thermo Tarp 3×3 Olive is a strong, water-resistant, lifesaving tarp which features a reflective layer.

Made of a light, waterproof, and very durable material with a ripstop weave.

This Thermo Tarp is is coated with a thermally reflective layer for added thermal comfort.  The silver coating perfectly reflects the body heat, which helps keep you comfortable during cold nights.  On hot days it reflects sunlight, significantly lowering the temperature under the tarp.

The thermal coating also protects against UV radiation and has been tested to confirm the highest possible UV protection factor of UPF 50+.

With webbing reinforcement and conveniently placed loops, the canopy can be used in a number of ways to provide both comfort and shelter.  Examples of which include the use of trees, rocks, hollows, trekking poles, paddles, bikes or tarp poles.

A shelter made from this tarp (weight 0.75kg) provides much more space than a tent of similar weight and can comfortably sleep 3 to 4 people.

In extremely bad weather it can be quickly and easily put to use.  It fully insulates both from the ground and from every other side. Thermal conductivity of tarp is almost 40 times lower than sand and almost 20 times lower than grass.  It offers you full protection from the cold, wet weather and wind while still providing you with enough room in which to sit or lie down.

On hot days pitch the shelter with the heat insulating side out for a shady space to protect you against overheating.

Use it for family camping when it can be used to create an airy patio over the entrance of the tent or even serve as a cover for an outdoor bathroom.  It can also be placed above of the tent to reduce heat build up on the inside..

The canopy can also be used as a large, comfortable ‘banana’ styled hammock with a width of 1.5m and length of 3m, or a hammock with protection against both wind and rain.
