Woodland Axe & Sheath
Woodland Axe & Sheath
The Woodland axe is a great all round axe for general work cutting, chopping, carving , splitting. Heavy enough to do the job but light enough to carry.
The head weighs 750g, total weight is 1050g and handle length is 18″.
This axe has a fine convex grind ideal for felling, cross cutting, splitting firewood and general use. They are ground by Brian Alcock, the last full time independent grinder in Sheffield with 50 years experience then honed to a razor edge.
Orders for this item are fulfilled by the team at WoodTools.
You must be 18 or older to order.
These axes are high carbon steel drop forged and hardened to 57 rockwell so they take and hold a keen edge. They are the perfect companion for a camping or canoeing trip but work equally well at home, around the garden or by the woodpile.
The handles are turned from top quality hickory and left with a textured cut finish rather than sanded smooth, we have to change the cutters regularly to achieve this clean cut finish but it results in a handle that will never slip out of your hand. They are oiled with linseed oil grown by Durwin Banks in West Sussex.
A really sharp edge is fragile and potentially dangerous so it’s a good idea to always keep your axe covered with a sheath. Here is a really great one from top quality English veg tanned leather.
THE SHEATH: Made of full grain leather veg tanned and through dyed for us specially by Clayton’s of Chesterfield. We make these sheaths up with strong rivets and brass press studs. They are a snug fit and will keep the sharp edge of your axe safe for many years. We make lots of them in a batch and you are buying direct from the maker so you get fantastic quality at a very reasonable price.
A GB Small Forest and Woodland Axe Prototypes....
“I’ve been using this axe now for the last two years, it’s been a constant companion on all my courses and trips into the woods.
I’d been looking for an alternative to the gold standard that is the GB small forest axe, as I was finding the relatively short cutting edge of the Small Forest meant pushing it to those large tasks like felling and limbing required a lot more work than I’d like.
The full curved edge of the Woodland axe is, in short, superb. It gives a great deal of bite when pressed to big jobs, the precise bevel Brian grinds into the steel is magical. Every swing brings the cutting deeply into the grain, weighted finely for balance between power and control, it makes light work of limbing and splitting firewood for wilderness camps.
The handle, unique in my experience, is subtly ribbed to give an immense textural feedback when working the axe. I’ve used it in rain and snow, during canoe trips and closer to home. Not once have I wondered if the helve will slip in my grip, you seem to know intrinsically that your axe is with you: a willing participant in the task at hand. Nor also is the textured grip at all wearing when used for constant work. Hours I’ve spent carving spoons, pot hangers and all manner of camp crafts, and I’ve failed to notice any hot spots or blisters from the work.
Robin and JoJo have, in my opinion, craft a tool from decades of experience with fine materials and expertise that rivals the Masters in the field. The woodland Axe is tough, balanced and keenly edged, a true backwoods tool and one that deserve adventure”
