At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

Homeland Bushcraft Course - An immersive Experience

Bushcraft Courses

Join us at our stunning oak canopied private woodland set within the Harewood Estate of West Yorkshire. Our canopied basecamp and a wood fire ensure our clients keep dry and the kettle is always boiling so bring along your favourite brew.

All of our sessions are run with a maximum of 10 people, that way we can maintain a low presence in the forest in order to experience Nature up close. The small group sizes also ensure a high level of interaction with the instructor, we'll get plenty of one to one tuition through the workshops to develop your skills at your own pace.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we're very open and there's no obligations.

We come to the woods for solace and respite from our everyday lives, they remain a haven for us in a world of distraction and disconnect. As we spend our days under the fresh leaves of May we’ll discover a long lost connection with our woods, the flora and fauna there, and our place within the landscape. We are, after all, members of a long line of creatures born of nature where sticks, fire, shelter, and the morning chorus were the textures of our upbringing, memories lost to us behind the hum of society. In learning, testing for ourselves the tangible crafts of the woods we might find that what we’re seeking isn’t a haven or respite, but our homeland down in the earthly woods.

Jamie Dakota | Chief Instructor

  • Day One- We meet you at 1pm and after a short walk into the woods we’re gathered around the campfire to welcome you for the week to the woods. The first workshop see you construct your own knife, adding a handle to a provided blade and shaping it to match your grip perfectly. This important tool of bushcraft must be kept safe, so we will also teach you several ways to make a sheath for your new knife. This will be your primary cutting tool for the course.

In the evening we’ll look at tool maintenance as you’ll be using your new knife plenty over the week, being able to resharpen it will be important.

Day Two- After a hearty breakfast today is about shelter, and involves the group contributing towards a large group shelter to act as a hub for gathering and sleeping without modern tents etc. We’ll look into means of providing ourselves with bedding and weaving mats to sleep on or under; as well as basecamp logistics like hand washing solutions, erecting large group canopies and kitchen arrangements.

During the rest of the afternoon we’ll make our own collapsible frame saws to aid in firewood processing and gathering resources for other crafts.

The evening session here is bow drill fire lighting in the group context, and from here into the course our fires can be lit this way.

Day Three- We set about making collapsible cooking rigs to suspend our pots over the fire, some of these are larger for a group setting and some will be smaller that are designed to be packed away with you in your personal kit.

In the afternoon we’ll go for a forage to explore tree and plant ID and their uses which we’ll build upon on every opportunity we get over the course. This will inform our hedgerow medicines workshop.

The evening session here in resin glue production for practical crafts.

Day Four-Starts us off with us making our own containers and utensils from the forest. These are beautiful crafts just as relevant back at home as they are useful in the woods.

We spend the afternoon in a deep dive of various cordage options from natural materials before you set about generating several metres of cordage for yourself in multiple fibres.

Day five- Our last day together brings all of our ongoing projects to completion, together with a consolidation phase bringing all your new skills to life.

We close out the course with a woodland sauna to clean off after a week in the woods.
