At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

Weaving a Pack Basket Course

Bushcraft Courses

Join us at our stunning oak canopied private woodland set within the Harewood Estate of West Yorkshire. Our canopied basecamp and a wood fire ensure our clients keep dry and the kettle is always boiling so bring along your favourite brew.

All of our sessions are run with a maximum of 10 people, that way we can maintain a low presence in the forest in order to experience Nature up close. The small group sizes also ensure a high level of interaction with the instructor, we'll get plenty of one to one tuition through the workshops to develop your skills at your own pace.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we're very open and there's no obligations.

Weaving a Pack Basket Course

£399.00

For 2025 Siegurd Van Leusen joins us once again from the Netherlands to lead this practical and detailed course in basket weaving.

Making baskets is perhaps one of the oldest and most widespread crafts in human history. From a wide variety of natural materials such as grasses, inner bark, leaves, bark and pine needles, baskets or other objects were and are still made by hand by means of braiding, matting, twining or coiling. In this workshop we will make a pack-basket by weaving with rattan.

A wonderfully relaxing weekend where at the end you can take your own creation home with you!

WHAT’S COVERED:

Rattan Pack Basket Making:

During our guided workshops you’ll get hands on tuition from Siegurd as he takes you on an immersive experience with this incredible resource. Over the course of the weekend, you'll learn the intricate techniques and skills required to craft your very own functional and visually stunning rattan pack basket. These baskets are incredibly robust, remaining flexible after weaving which makes them ideal for canoe packs and back packs.

Under the guidance of our friendly instructors, you'll begin by mastering the fundamentals of rattan preparation and selection. From there, you'll progress to the core basket weaving techniques, exploring various patterns and designs to personalise your creation. This workshop is not difficult but it helps if you work accurately and neatly.

We will also learn about colouring the fibres with natural dyes, further building on your own unique aesthetic and creativity to develop a basket that is all your own.

You'll learn how to incorporate additional elements, such as leather or wooden handles, to elevate the aesthetic and practical appeal of your handmade rattan pack basket. By the end of this relaxed weekend in the woods, you'll leave with a one-of-a-kind piece that showcases your newfound craftsmanship.

While we weave in the woods you’ll also learn about rattan as a material, it’s history and other uses; and excitingly once you’ve learned this construction method, what materials you could also use for this technique to make baskets from all manner of materials.

In short, a weekend that you do not want to miss!
